Windows 10 Upgrade Instructions

For HP & Lenovo Computers shipped by TouchMD

About the Windows 10 Upgrade

The Windows 10 Upgrade has been tested by our IT staff on all HP and Lenovo touchscreen models shipped by TouchMD.  Although this document was created with that equipment in mind, these instructions should work for any computer running Windows 7 or Windows 7 Pro. Please note that the Windows 10 upgrade is available for free only until July 29th, 2016. For more information about the Windows 10 upgrade, visit the “Upgrade to Windows 10: FAQ” page.

If you have third party software other than TouchMD installed on your computer, please verify with the software provider that it is compatible with Windows 10 prior to starting the upgrade.

Preparing for the Windows 10 Install

Run the Windows Update until no important updates remain:

  1. Tap on the Windows Start button and run the Windows Update program (you may need to expand the menu to see it, or just type “update” in the search box).
  2. In the left pane, click “Check for updates”, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.
  3. If you see a message telling you that important updates are available, or telling you to review important updates, click the message to view and select the important updates to install.
  4. Select the checkboxes for any updates that you want to install, and then click “OK”.  We recommend that you install ALL required and optional updates.
  5. Follow any instructions prompting a reboot of your computer.
  6. Repeat Steps 1-5 above to check for and install any additional updates until there are no longer any updates available.  Often an update will spawn additional updates.

If you have been keeping your computer up to date, this shouldn’t take long.  Otherwise, you may have to run Windows Update three or more times to get the computer completely updated.
